Some Improvements…
November 18th, 2010 § Leave a Comment
I have a lot to catch up on here. Especially since OmniChef and OmniGirl refuse to respond to their post access stuff. I promise I will be on as soon as the Harry Potter fest is over, and, you know, we finish NaNoWriMo.
But I did want to say that I woke up this morning and decided, since it’s been… meh, nearly a month, that I’d take a carbon footprint test. I think I’m going to do these every month on the monthiversary [I'd like to thank OmniChef for coining that term] of the death of my carnivorous self.
ANYWAY. I got 1.64 Earths!! That’s still way more Earth that we actually have. Even if everyone lived like this, it would still be too much. That scares me. I feel like I do a bit… I’ve started to learn NOT to keep the computer on all the time [scary prospect], I’m learning to give up TV. I keep the heater on 60, and bundle up… I can think of ways I could get better, yeah. We need a grey water system and we definitely need to simplify, get rid of shit we don’t need and recycle more. We do well with the garbage, except in the bedrooms.
I need to come up with a list of things to do to cut my footprint. But for now, and I wish it was enough, but for now I can say that IN A MONTH, I have downsized my carbon footprint by 0.95 Earths. I think that’s good. It’s something at least. And it’s a reduction of roughly 37%, so that’s nothing to sneeze at.
Stay warm, stay safe and stay loved.

One Week: Candy Corn and Meat Dreaming
October 28th, 2010 § 1 Comment
So, last night I dreamt I was eating meat [Here I dreamt I was an omnivore]… Or something else non-vegan. In the dream I didn’t even notice, and then I looked down at my plate, filled with non-vegan foods and I freaked out internally because OH MY GOD. I’m a VEGAN. WHY AM I EATING THIS? WHY DID I NOT NOTICE?
I know it’s coming but I just haven’t had any cravings for meat. The meals I’ve been able to eat have been satisfying, and sometimes AWESOME [That is, when the boy cooks [he needs a name. He hasn't given me one yet]]. I haven’t been spending a lot of time on what I can’t eat at all. I’ve watched Food Network and don’t want the burgers, or steaks… In fact there’s still a steak left here in the boy’s fridge from the last meal I ate before I was a vegan.
I also know there will be a preachy part at around 6 months to a year. I feel it coming. Right now, I’m still planning on cooking Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners, the same way I always have for the last 10 years. Plenty of AWESOME Turkey, my amazing mashed potatoes, filled with heavy whipping cream and like, a pound of butter…I don’t know if I’ll mind not eating them. If I can find a vegan recipe for an awesome pumpkin pie, though, I think I’ll be set.
I weathered the storm of asking my mom if it was REALLY okay for me to eat the candy corn (OH GOD I LOVE IT) that she’d bought for Halloween. I had two little bags she’d made up for me. I made her read the package to /me because she said she thought they were fine. Of course they weren’t fine – I KNEW they had to have gelatin in them, so I wasn’t surprised when there was. Still a good disguise to keep with any stash, I think. You can’t smell anything that might be hiding in a random place in my room.
I even found change and went to Taco Bell with OmniGirl, who had a massive craving. She ate her food. I didn’t care.
Last night during the series, I did see a commercial for a Monster Chalupa, and it wasn’t a vegan thing anymore, it was an I HAVE TO EAT THIS NOW. IT’S A MONSTER CHALUPA!!! But I’m trying to get to the point where eating meat makes my body go haywire, which I think says a lot about animal products.
Sorry, the boy and I were discussing what he wants his name to be for the blog. I mean, seriously. I like Vegan Chef. Or Veggie Chef. He came up with the first one. He also came up with “Vegan Tales” – like Veggie Tales but more awesome. Way more awesome and non-indoctrinating. We’ll have to hang on to that, maybe as the title of our video podcasts.
I hate to leave you all, I really do; but OmniChef is reading the first Harry Potter book, which means I must off to some awesome Lupin/Tonks fanfic.
Stay warm, stay safe and stay loved.

My Footprint
October 23rd, 2010 § 5 Comments
I went to myfootprint.org today. Just to see what my carbon footprint was and if it changes in the future. I listed that I was a vegan on it [I know. Look at me. Claiming it.], and it came back that if everyone lived like me, we’d need 2.59 Earths to sustain the population.
It’d be nice to get down below one, don’t you think?
What’s yours?
Hello!

Welcome to Suddenly Vegan. The idea for this website came from a phone conversation and someone’s [note: mine] crazy idea to jump directly from omnivore to vegan do not pass go do not collect $200.
My name is Veggie, I’m 30 years old, and I became a vegan on Thursday, the 21st of October, 2010, at 11:30 pm.
Here I hope to document what that’s like.
I am lucky: My best friend has been a vegan for awhile, and before that was vegetarian. I’m sure she can hook me up with recipes, and the male support system is a really good cook.
He was great, too. He jumped right in [AFTER I texted him with "I got into the car and now I'm a vegan." and he said "What???" and "Serious?"] with, “We’ll have to come up with a menu of good vegan food,” and “That’s cool. I support it.”
So maybe I can get him to come in here once in awhile and post about what’s it’s like being a meat-eating vegan chef – or the boyfriend of a total loon who just said she can’t eat anything he cooks. And he cooks REALLY well.
Regardless, here I am.
Stay warm, stay safe, and stay loved.
